How pool salt dosing is calculated

Unlike other pool chemicals, salt dosing is a straightforward mass calculation: pounds of salt = (target ppm − current ppm) × gallons × 8.34 lb per gallon ÷ 1,000,000. Since salt fully dissolves and doesn't react away like chlorine or acid, this formula is exact rather than an approximation — check your chlorinator's target range, since it varies by manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

Most residential salt chlorinators target 2,700-3,400 ppm — check your specific system's manual, since running too low or too high can trigger error codes or reduce chlorine output.

Salt doesn't evaporate with water, but splash-out, backwashing, and draining/refilling all remove it — test salt level monthly and top off as needed.
