Pool pump run time calculator

Enter your pool volume and pump's flow rate (check the pump label or spec sheet) to find how many hours a day to run it.

How pump run time is calculated

Turnover time is your pool volume divided by the pump's flow rate. Run time then multiplies that by a usage factor — 1× for normal maintenance, more if you have heavy bather load, hot weather, or you're recovering from algae or cloudy water. Splitting run time into two shorter sessions (morning and evening) often circulates more evenly than one long block.

Frequently asked questions

Most pools need 6-8 hours a day to fully turn over — enter your specific pool volume and pump flow rate above for an exact number.

A variable-speed pump running longer at a lower speed usually uses less electricity than a single-speed pump running short and fast, while still hitting full turnover — see the pool pump electricity cost calculator to compare.
