We divide bed length by spacing to get plants per row, and bed width by spacing to get the number of rows, adding one to each so a plant sits at both edges. Multiplying rows by plants-per-row gives the total — a grid layout, not the loose "area ÷ spacing squared" estimate that undercounts edge plants.
